Country Guide: Senegal

Published: June 2026

Introduction

Senegal is one of West Africa’s most stable democracies and an increasingly important commercial hub for Francophone Africa. Strategically located on the Atlantic coast, the country serves as a gateway to the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), providing access to a regional market of more than 400 million people. With a population exceeding 18 million and a government focused on economic transformation through its emerging development strategy, Senegal offers growing opportunities for international investors and exporters.

The UK and Senegal enjoy expanding trade and investment relations, particularly in energy, infrastructure, financial services, agriculture, education, healthcare, and professional services. Senegal’s economy has traditionally been driven by agriculture, fisheries, transport, and services, but recent offshore oil and gas discoveries have significantly increased international interest in the market. The launch of production at the Greater Tortue Ahmeyim (GTA) gas project and the Sangomar oil field has positioned Senegal as an emerging energy producer, creating opportunities across engineering, logistics, training, environmental services, and supply-chain support.

For UK businesses, key opportunities exist in renewable energy, infrastructure development, water management, agribusiness, healthcare, education, digital services, and energy-related industries. The country’s improving business environment, major infrastructure investments, and strategic location continue to strengthen its appeal as a base for regional operations across West Africa.

Business Travel

Blaise Diagne International Airport (DSS), located approximately 45 kilometres from Dakar, is Senegal’s principal international gateway. While direct flights between the UK and Senegal are limited, convenient one-stop connections are available through Paris, Brussels, Madrid, Casablanca, Lisbon, and other major European hubs.

British citizens travelling to Senegal for short business visits do not normally require a visa, although entry requirements and permitted lengths of stay should always be verified before departure. Passports must meet validity requirements, and travellers should check current health and entry requirements through official sources before travelling. Dakar is the country's commercial, financial, and political centre and hosts the majority of international businesses operating in Senegal. Other important economic centres include Thiès, Saint-Louis, Mbour, and Ziguinchor. The new Regional Express Train (TER) system linking Dakar with Blaise Diagne International Airport has improved transport connectivity, while taxis and ride-hailing services are widely used within the capital.

French is the primary language of business and government, although English is increasingly used in international business settings. Meetings tend to be formal and relationship-focused, with personal introductions and trust-building playing an important role in commercial negotiations.

International-standard hotels, conference facilities, and serviced accommodation are readily available in Dakar, particularly around the Plateau business district and the coastal business areas.

Events and Exhibitions

Senegal hosts several significant trade events and conferences that attract businesses from across West Africa:

These events provide valuable opportunities for UK companies seeking distributors, local partners, customers, and investment opportunities across Francophone West Africa.

Shipping and Logistics

Senegal benefits from one of West Africa’s most strategically important maritime locations. The Port of Dakar is among the region’s leading deep-water ports and serves as a key gateway for trade into Senegal, Mali, and other landlocked countries in the region. Its location on major Atlantic shipping routes makes it particularly attractive for international logistics operations.

Blaise Diagne International Airport handles the majority of international air cargo traffic and supports growing trade links between West Africa, Europe, and the Middle East.

Senegal is a member of the West African Economic and Monetary Union (WAEMU/UEMOA), ECOWAS, and the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), supporting regional trade integration and market access. The country is also investing heavily in logistics infrastructure, industrial parks, and special economic zones, including developments around Diamniadio.

Customs procedures are administered by Senegal Customs (Direction Générale des Douanes). UK exporters should ensure compliance with import regulations, product certification requirements, and customs documentation procedures. Working with experienced freight forwarders and customs brokers can help ensure efficient market entry and supply-chain management.
